It started soon after we swung down from the branches and landed on our upright feet. Since the early days Man has always conglomerated into groups and clans and through this developed a language unique to that specific group. The Smooth Knobblies are a prime example of a group (of primates...) who have gathered together over the common interest of cycling and developed their own sayings and languages. I am well aware that some of the Sknobs are from Pretoria and that doesn't mean they just find it easier to communicate in repetitive phrases and sentences (unlike rugby captains at post match interviews who always tell you that some players put up their hands and stepped up to the plate....or that its a young team with combinations that are still learning to work together *yawn* - but I digress). We have evolved (to a degree) and, as our endearing partners and spouses will testify to, certainly developed our own sayings and phrases that make us a unique (and somewhat offbeat) cycling group. According to that highly valued and credible website Wikipedia, a subculture is defined as: ...a group of people within a culture (whether distinct or hidden) which differentiates them from the larger culture to which they belong. Well - we are cyclists in the broader definition. But within that we are definately our own group. To further illustrate this, here is a list pf phrases and captions that selfishly capture some of the unique sayings familiar to the group:
