I haven't done a Cape Epic before. I'm planning on doing one in a few days time. So irrespective of the outcome there, I have been through the first part of the process - and that's the training.
It takes SO much time and does place stress on all aspects of your life.
But here are some further anecdotes that I have experienced that remind you that you are in the middle of training for the Cape Epic:
- Your wife
says all she washes are cycling clothing and plastic water bottles.
- Your riding
energy mix is finished (again!)
- 6:30am is a
long sleep in.
- Over the
last 2 months you’ve tried all the fruit, nut, and protein bars that you got
from being in the queue at Woolies.
- You snap
awake and find yourself on the toilet….at work…at 10am!
- When you
look at your watch and it says 20:34 - it’s considered a late night.
- You don’t
care how old the cycle jersey is that you're wearing – you've been through all
of the others.
- You know
all of the names of all the staff in at least 2 bike shops.
- You put
your bike into the garage at night…and find yourself staring at it with
affection.
- You have to
charge your lights; GPS; and phone every night.
- You have
permanent helmet hair.
- You don’t
mind stepping on the scale.
- 2 beers down –
and you're buzzing!
- In your
mind the weekend is divided into 4 equal quadrants – choose 2 for riding.
- You start
shopping for jeans one size smaller.
- People you
haven’t seen in a while say you look really fit.
- People who
know you really well say you look really tired.
- You're not
sure where you last put your helmet and shoes – because you've been dropping
them in different places around the house every day.
- You have a
work colleague who has a neighbour who’s also doing the Epic.
- You start
shitting yourself because you have a work colleague who has a neighbour who’s
also doing the Epic and he “rides from Stellenbosch to Cape Town every day”.
- You have a
work colleague who has a neighbour who’s done the Epic and he trained for 25
hours a week for 6 months!
- You have a
work colleague who has a neighbour who’s done the Epic and he lost his wife and
his job because of the training – but he says it was the best thing he’s ever done!
I'll keep you posted. I'm just too tired to write any more...
