Well well - perhaps back to a slightly more mundane and relevant post will calm things down? I had no idea that our take on a drunken driver killing a cyclist would unleash such commentary. But its always good to know who your friends are!
So - to the races then. We have a semi-Smooth Knobblies team entered for the DC. The CrackMan has co-opted some other riding buddies and this has forced us to really up our game! Imagine our surprise when we were told one of our new DC team members won the Lourensford MTB race (Oliver Williams)! The training rides have also been on a slightly quicker note than normal. If we consider that our morning road rides average about 29km/h (over 40-50km), then you can imagine how we're feeling the pace when the weekend 100km+ rides average 32km/h. This past Sunday was the 155km One Tonner and (with no bunch riding) we averaged around the 33km/h mark. That's with a South Easter to boot!
So - how did we all do? Here are the results from the One Tonner (name/time/position):
Epic John - 4:42 - 137/765
The Crack Man - 4:42 - 138/765
The Moose - 4:45 - 142/765
Woody - 4:45 - 143/765
Andrew Koen - 4:46 - 144/765
Nic Stopforth - 5:02 - 259/765
Meanwhile, up in KZN The Munster Monster (Shaun) was riding out of his skin to start getting his cycling track record established. After having charmed his way into the VB group (he was originally seeded to leave practically last!) he set off on the downhill race. Although the "downhill" part seems to be a bit of a misnomer - the ascent on the Amashova is 1160m - not too far off the Argus ascent. But in principle its a downhill race with some fast sections in-between. No doubt Shaun will have some photos that we can add to this entry at a later stage.
Shaun tried to convince me that it was tight bunch sprint finish at the end...but I reckon that was all in his head. Those guys behind him are free-wheeling and chatting their way to the line. (I suppose every group has got one!)
